API measurements and separately measured interfaces can produce different results. Measurements describe the configured prompts and retrieval context.
Your mentions may grow while competitors grow faster. Comparisons across the same prompts reveal relative visibility and can surface brands you were not tracking.
Real Intren – SEO data shows how measured AI answers become a clear competitor overview. Competitor names and identifying logos are redacted in the example screenshots.

| Brand | Mention rate | Mention share | Mentions | Average AI position | Sentiment | Citation rate |

| Competitor A | 22.0% | 6.8% | 323 | #3.46 | 84.2% | 20.1% |
| Competitor B | 19.5% | 6.0% | 286 | #2.34 | 86.4% | 15.1% |

This table is an extract, so mention shares do not sum to 100%. Mention rate is relative to measured answers; mention share is relative to measured brand mentions. One answer can mention several brands. A lower average position is better.
Untracked competitors are brands already found in AI answers. Review their mention counts, average positions and models, then add relevant brands to tracking or exclude them.

In the Intren – SEO example, the own brand receives 409 mentions and a 27.9% mention rate; the leading tracked competitor receives 323 mentions and 22.0%. Their average AI positions are #1.64 and #3.46 respectively. Separate metrics reveal both frequency and recommendation order.

Use the same prompt set and comparable periods. Brand variants and competitor classification affect the metrics. Excluded discovered competitors are omitted from the mention-share denominator.
It is mention share within the measured answers and brands, rather than revenue or total market share.
Other brands can be discovered in answers. You can review their relevance and exclude inappropriate entries.
Additional brands can be discovered in answers. Review whether they compete for the same buyer need.
You can exclude them. Exclusions affect both lists and the Share of Voice denominator, so account for classification changes in comparisons.
Competitor mentions may grow faster. Share is relative; interpret it alongside your own answer counts and appearance rate.
Start with brands consistently recommended for your commercially important questions. The overall leader may differ from the leader of a priority topic.
